The government of Nepal has declared that it has the βduty to protectβ the Himalayas from the risks posed by climate change and the increasing number of climbers tackling the peaks in the region, including Everest. The Nepali government funded a team of soldiers and sherpas to remove 11 tons of waste, four bodies, and one skeleton during the climbing season. The permits to climb Everest, which cost $11,000 each, are valid for 90 days.
