Schiphol Cityhopper death was suicide, airport police confirm

The man who died at Schiphol airport after becoming caught up in the motor of a KLM Cityhopper had deliberately climbed into the engine, Dutch border police said on Thursday evening.

The aircraft had just completed the pushback procedure and was about to taxi to the runway when the man climbed onto the aircraft.  He worked for a Schiphol operating company.

β€œThe investigation has revealed that he intentionally climbed into the engine, indicating this is a case of suicide,” the police said in a short statement. β€œOut of respect for the victim and their loved ones, no further statements will be made.”

The AD said the incident had a β€œmajor impact” on the crew and passengers who had seen it happen.

KLM Cityhopper flies with small aircraft from Brazilian manufacturer Embraer which can take between 88 and 132 passengers.
